Testing Policies
Drug and alcohol problems are major issues for employers in the UK effecting the profitability and effectiveness or organisations as well as the health, safety and welfare of all staff.
Employers will be breaking the law if they know of drug-related activities in the work-place and fail to act.
They have a duty of care to protect staff from the mistakes of other employees acting under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
What are the benefits of introducing a drug and alcohol policy and testing?
It is a proven, low-cost strategy, that identifies those needing help, reduces demand, cuts down on accident and sickness leave, reduces compensation claims, improves attendance and increases productivity.
"Drug abuse makes the user 33% less productive, 3 times as likely to be late, 4 times as likely to hurt others at work or themselves, 5 times as likely to sue for compensation and 10 times as likely to miss work."
I know most people who work here. There are no drug or alcohol abusers in this workforce...
This is another common statement, but if police suspect one in five road accidents are caused by drug related problems and one in seven deaths on the road involves drivers who are over the legal drink drive limit, can there really be no abusers in your workforce?
I recognise the need for testing but is it an expensive process?
NO! The tests are inexpensive and most companies who adopt a policy benefit from greater productivity and fewer costly incidents.
